We work with portfolio partners, local communities and external stakeholders to reduce the harmful effects of pollution and waste on human health and the environment, increase the suitable habitat for species, and increase Victorians valuing nature.
Reduce the harmful effects of pollution and waste on human health and the environment
We will:
- reduce waste generation and waste disposal to landfill, and increase resource recovery, to boost Victoria’s economic productivity and competitiveness
- implement regulatory and governance frameworks and lead policy reforms to protect the health of Victorians and the liveability of Victoria
Outcome measures | Result 18-19 | Target 19-20 |
---|---|---|
Reduction in pollutants from priority hotspots | 20 | <20 |
Waste generation per capita (one-year lag) | 2.1 tonnes | (a) |
Proportion of waste diverted from landfill (one-year lag) | 67% | (a) |
(a) Targets will be confirmed through the development of the Circular Economy Policy and Action Plan
Secure a net improvement in the outlook for species
We will:
- review Victorian legislation to enable proactive management and conservation of threatened species and ensure native vegetation is sensibly protected
- use the best available information for decision making by undertaking best practice science, supporting citizen science and providing improved access to information
- work to co-design and implement biodiversity response planning and fund on ground actions in partnership with communities, land managers, Traditional Owners and natural resource management agencies
Outcome measures | Result 18-19 | Target 19-20 |
---|---|---|
Percentage change in suitable habitat (on average) in 50 years for all species | 3.6% | 3.5% |
Hectares of conservation management action in priority locations (e.g. herbivore control, weed control, pest predator control, revegetation) | 200,000 (forecast, subject to assessment of grant recipient documentation) | Measure now disaggregated (see below) |
Hectares of weed control in priority locations | New measure | 140,000 |
Hectares of pest predator control in priority locations | New measure | 400,000 |
Hectares of pest herbivore control in priority locations | New measure | 300,000 |
Hectares of revegetation in priority locations for habitat connectivity | New measure | 1,000 |
Hectares of newly permanently protected areas of native vegetation on private land | 2,074 | 600 |
Increase Victorians valuing nature
We will:
- partner with the Department of Health and Human Services, Parks Victoria, the community and our stakeholders to implement the Victorian Memorandum for health and nature through projects that enable more Victorians to connect with and be active in the natural environment
- partner with the community and our stakeholders to ensure that Victorians have opportunities to connect with nature, value our environment and continue to gain environmental, social and economic benefits from it
- implement a risk-based, intelligence-led regulation and compliance approach to protect Victoria’s natural assets and resources
Outcome measures | Result 18-19 | Target 19-20 |
---|---|---|
Participation in community-based environmental programs | 40,000 | 130,000 |
Number of volunteer hours | New measure | 1,000,000 |
