Darby WalkerDarby loves that no 2 days are the same on the job, and he gets to work out in the environment.

This makes being a PFF the perfect role for him.

‘One day I can be at a planned burn and then the next day I can be doing some storm recovery,’ Darby said.

‘Or I can be involved in flood mitigation works, or helping rescue a dolphin at the beach, getting it back to safety.

‘The work is really diverse, and it exposes you to many different kinds of opportunities through this one role.

‘It is good to increase the wellness of the environment everywhere we get to work.’

Each year, FFMVic employs field-based seasonal project firefighters (PFF) to complete tasks like emergency response, the prevention and suppression of bushfires, planned burning, pest and weed control, road maintenance and other land management activities in Victoria’s many parks and forests.

Darby encourages anyone thinking about applying for one of the PFF roles currently available across Victoria to do so.

‘Definitely 100% give it a go,’ Darby said.

‘It is the type of thing that can open up a lot of different doors in land management or environmental roles.

‘Once you do one season you can branch out into different parks and environment work.

‘I absolutely love it and never want to give it away.

‘If you are thinking of applying I would definitely say give it a crack.

‘You never know where it might.’

FFMVic employs several hundred PFFs each year, at more than 80 locations around Victoria. They help suppress bushfires and assist in prevention works, including planned burning.
